Hello, and welcome to Drabbletober. This is episode 7, season 3, for Wednesday the seventh of October 2026.

Unknown Death God(?)

by Elizabeth Guilt

It started as a joke.

The history teacher herded us onto a bus to visit a local archaeological dig. Bits of clay pots, unreadable inscriptions on grave markers, corroded twists of metal. The usual.

A cabinet labelled "Religion" was full of things no-one could identify. A card described a blobby lump as "Unknown death god(?)"

Afterwards we refused all kinds of things, claiming they went against our beliefs as followers of the unknown death god(?). Teachers rolled their eyes when we declined football, and chanted instead.

It was funny, until the first death. The coroner gave the cause as "unknown".

It's been my belief for quite some time now, that the phrase "probably of ritual significance" is really just archaeologist-speak for "stuffed if we know".
